The video walks you through an upgrade process of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller. In addition, we will look at how we can minimize network downtime due to the upgrade by pre-downloading a new software image to access points. We will observe the access point during reboot and be able to see its software images being deployed as it detects the new version on the controller. This is a recommended method when having to upgrade a large number of access point especially when they need to pull the new image across a WAN. We will be using a vWLC for our demonstration but the steps are also applicable to other traditional WLC models.

thanks your video!

i have now WLC 5508 Ver.7.0.98.0 with 50 AP License. when i upgrade will it require license ??

Upgrading WLC software does not require any license.

Great Video Metha once again

Thank you for your feedback and support :-)

i have the HA pair. Now i was upgraded the my primary controller. is it requirted to upgrade the backup one,

If your secondary WLC is in sync, it should be upgraded automatically along with the primary. There is nothing special you need to do.

Hello Metha,
thank you for the quality of your training,
i'm getting stuck in a bed situation after trying to upgrade my WLC 2504, the electricity went off while upgrade. after turning on the WLC it looks like it get the new image (noticed after interrupting boot with ESC ) but it can't boot up from both images,
going through couple of articles, it seems like i need to perform a manual upgrade using RTOS and FP images, and those images are difficulte to get them from internet,
is there any other way to solve this issue without using RTOS ans FP images ?

Unfortunately that appears to be the only way and the file seems to only be available through TAC.

hhmm... this controller is a home lab WLC 2504, and support contract has been expired, TAC won't help in this situation.
i think no way for get my WLC system back to life,
any other idea apart of TAC ?

You can scour the web to see if someone has posted or is willing to share the file but that might be tough. Otherwise try to find a TAC supported 2504 and open a case to have TAC share a file with you.

Hi, great presentation, is there anything special for an active active setup?
Or is it treated as 2 stand alone systems?

If you have HA setup, the upgrade should take care of both WLC. The standby should get upgraded first.

Hello, Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful!

I have several question:
How do I need to upgrade WLC which is running in 1+N HA Mode? Do I need to upload new images to both units? Which units should be updated first?

WLC in N+1 HA are independent of each other so they need to be upgraded separately. You would want to upgrade the backup unit first, then pre-download the new image to the APs so when you upgrade the primary, the AP can failover to backup WLC using the new image with minimal downtime.
