Cisco ISR 4000 Router Upgrade Guide from 3.x to Denali 16.2

Since Cisco announced an intention to unify software version across routing and switch platforms, we have already seen the first software release of Denali 16.1 on Cisco IOS XE switches. Subsequently, Cisco has also released the first common software version between router and switch with Denali 16.2.1. While you can upgrade a switch as you normally would, upgrading a router requires a closer attention. In this article, we will show you how to upgrade an ISR 4000 to Denali 16.2.1. We will be using ISR 4321 running IOS XE 3.6.

Cisco Nexus 7000 Sequential and Parallel EPLD Upgrade. Who wins?

Whether it is a fresh new install or a software upgrade, these would be the time for you to also consider an EPLD upgrade. Unlike software upgrade where you can potentially avoid an extended downtime using In-Service Software Upgrade (ISSU), EPLD upgrade requires the hardware to be taken offline and, in some cases, even chassis reload. Since the EPLD version has to stay in sync with the NXOS version, depending on what version you are upgrading to, you might need to upgrade all the pieces of hardware, and these include all supervisors, linecards, fans, and fabrics, which can result in a significant downtime.

In this article, we will provide timing results from running tests between sequential and parallel EPLD upgrade. This is to give you some guideline and help you determine appropriate actions for your environment.

WL0002 - WLC Software Upgrade

The video walks you through an upgrade process of Cisco Wireless LAN Controller. In addition, we will look at how we can minimize network downtime due to the upgrade by pre-downloading a new software image to access points. We will observe the access point during reboot and be able to see its software images being deployed as it detects the new version on the controller. This is a recommended method when having to upgrade a large number of access point especially when they need to pull the new image across a WAN. We will be using a vWLC for our demonstration but the steps are also applicable to other traditional WLC models.
